Alex Valencia is the co-owner and president of We Do Web Content, a digital marketing agency that devises content and marketing strategies, producing online content for law firms, medical professionals, and businesses of all sizes nationwide. Alex counsels hundreds of clients with the broad knowledge gained from his direct experience in digital marketing, SEO, email marketing, marketing automation, content marketing, and social marketing. In the past couple of year the firm has seen explosive growth, increasing its staff size five times over and yielding a three-year growth of 197%. This led We Do Web Content to became a proud member of the Inc. 5000 this past year.
Since its inception in 2008, We Do Web Content has led the industry with its content creation and a laser-focused commitment to every client’s individual needs. Combining years of experience and forward-thinking technology, they started developing an internal proprietary software that would streamline the content creation process. The platform, named WeDo, streamlines the content creation process, while closing the SEO gap on competitors, producing real-time reports, and scaling any business’s workload. There is currently a waitlist to join the beta and they plan to fully launch it later this year.
What is We Do Web Content all about?
We Do Web Content is a premier digital marketing agency working with the nation’s top law firms, medical groups, and other niche industries. We develop content marketing strategies and websites, concentrating on providing unparalleled digital solutions for our exclusive clients.
We are passionate about storytelling and harnessing the power of content to help our clients grow.
Tell us a little bit about your background and how you started your company?
The idea for We Do Web Content came from my wife. A good friend and mentor hired her to manage the development of his disability law firm’s website. We both realized quickly how effective content was at driving traffic to a site. There were SEO agencies and web design agencies, but nobody was creating meaningful content at scale.
We discovered a gap in the market and were able to fill it. As we pioneered this new way of marketing law firms with user-centered content, people began reaching out. We grew organically and at a rapid pace. We figured out how to harness the power of content and help clients succeed online at scale. Content is king and drives everything.
What would you say are the top 3 skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur, and why?
The top three skills of a successful entrepreneur are creativity, resourcefulness, and follow-through. Success comes from having an idea, a vision, and a plan to execute that vision. Every business begins with a solid idea. Then, you use that idea to create a meaningful and valuable offer for your ideal clients. From there, you need to have a vision of where you want to go. Without knowing your end game, it’s hard to develop a plan for success. And, finally, you need to create a detailed roadmap with room for flexibility to achieve your vision.
What are your plans for the future? How do you plan to grow this company?
Our plans for the future are to continue growing our platform, possibly moving into other verticals, and bringing on new content solutions for our clients.
We recently announced our newest project–WeDo (pronounced wee-doo)–the first-of-its-kind, custom content management platform. The groundbreaking SaaS product offers a proprietary client lexicon, writing assistance, and competitor real-time analytics for digital marketing agencies and small, medium, or enterprise businesses looking for an ideal way to navigate their content marketing.
How do you separate yourself from your competitors?
We’re not a one-size-fits-all agency. We work with specific niches, offering premium digital marketing services. We look at our client’s entire digital marketing strategy and provide a holistic content approach that will meet the business’s needs, paying close attention to what will drive traffic and sales.
This approach requires taking time to properly audit and learn about our clients and their companies. Using our extensive research, we formulate a custom plan to drive traffic and convert visitors into sales.
What were the top mistakes you made starting your business, and what did you learn from them?
When I first started, the biggest mistake I made was believing a handshake was as good as a contract. Unfortunately, it is not. Another mistake is to undervalue experience and hire hastily. You have to vet new team members appropriately. It doesn’t work any other way. You have to hire slow and fire fast.
Tell us a bit about your marketing process. What has been the most successful form of marketing for you?
Our most successful form of marketing has been attending and speaking at conferences and webinars. About eighty percent of the times I’ve spoken at a webinar or conference, I’ve realized conversions from the business owners in attendance.
We met our largest client at the last live meeting we attended. The law firm is involved in several prominent cases receiving national television coverage.
What is the one thing you wish you knew before starting your business?
I wish I had a better business mindset. Starting a business forced me out of my comfort zone. I went from being highly successful in my 20s and 30s to starting all over again. It’s terrifying to launch a new business from scratch.
I highly recommend How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. I’ve read it countless times since my teacher recommended it to me in the ninth grade. I try to re-read it every year. After all, in business, all roads lead to relationships. Entrepreneurs should understand the importance of treating people right, putting others first, and being a good conversationalist.
I listen to a Christian-based podcast from Elevation Church. The sermons help to keep my mindset right.
As for online courses, we love HubSpot. Anyone looking to expand their knowledge of digital marketing will find a suitable class and free resources on their website. They offer solid courses on email marketing and social media. The important thing is to continually up your game. Get out there and learn something new.
If you only had 1000 dollars to start a new business, knowing everything you know now, how would you spend it?
I would spend it on marketing because it’s always worth investing in your web and social content. I’ve seen the success of our clients. Marketing is more vital than people realize.
What is your favorite quote?
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of convenience and comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy,”
– Martin Luther King, Jr.
What’s your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?
Research is everything. Learn everything you need to know about your business. Acquaint yourself with the strategies of your competitors. It also helps to examine the strategies of the companies you don’t believe are on your level of success. Also, look into the failures of previously successful people and learn from their mistakes.
