Please tell us a little bit about your company – what is Ambitious with A Purpose all about?
I am the founder of Ambitious with A Purpose, an initiative geared towards helping mothers implement balance between motherhood and their personal identity. I started this organization mostly due to the overwhelm I saw many moms experiencing when the pandemic hit. A lot of mom’s lives were completely turned upside down when they found that they now had to work from home and be a full-time parent at the same time. There were already Moms who desperately needed balance but now with the virtual schooling and some daycares being closed, moms are having to juggle much more than before. Studies are finding some moms are even leaving their careers because it is becoming too much to accommodate. My initiative is about empowerment for Moms to find time for things such as self-care, gratitude opportunities and finding strategies to make their journey a little less overwhelming. I provide 1 on 1 coaching. I am also in the process of releasing a Youtube Channel filled with video content for Moms struggling with this and have just released a Guided Journal for Moms filled with journaling prompts to help Moms take the steps to implement more balance in their lives.
Tell us a little bit about your background and how you started your company?
I was a young mom with my first child and struggled with trying to be a great mom and still not loosing who I was as a person. I loved motherhood but there were still so many things I wanted to do with my life. There were many dreams I wanted to fulfill and goals I wanted to accomplish. There were times when I felt guilty for wanting a life outside of motherhood. Eventually I worked to learn how to balance both aspects. When the pandemic came about I felt a sense of hopelessness because for so long I had been just working and climbing the corporate ladder, which was great. I love working and was rewarded greatly for it but I felt I was not contributing enough of myself to the things that I was passionate about. With the pandemic, I started to see Moms struggle to have balance and figured I would start a business helping them. It was something that I had mastered in my own life. I also knew the benefits that it would bring to Moms. That’s when I started my business Ambitious With a Purpose. All of the details of my brand center around creating a better balance for moms between motherhood and moms separate identitys. Even the name Ambitious with a Purpose was very intentional. It bascially represents that the mom can be Ambitious and fullfill her goals with even more purpose, her child.
What are your plans, how do you plan to grow this company?
My plans are to grow my business in every way possible and to do that is going to require hard work. The good thing about it is that I am not scared of hard work. I have always worked hard and excelled in many things in my life. I plan to apply that same logic even more so in my business. I am going to continue actively promoting my business, investing in it, networking, asking for more oppurtunities and just continue to inspire and empower moms.
What was the biggest problem you encountered with your business and how did you overcome it?
The biggest problem I found was being able to stand out in what I felt like was a saturated market. Once I started looking at things differently and investigating what other brands weren’t offering, I was able to correctly target my intended audience. The key was to touch on different areas others weren’t. I started listening to what my target audience pain areas were and started working to help them solve the issues. The thing is when you start a business you have to remember you are not starting it for you. You are starting it based on what your customers wants. Once you get that understood, finding your target customers becomes much easier.
What were the top mistakes you made starting your business and what did you learn from it?
Some of the top mistakes I faced were not being consistent in the beginning. Starting a business requires so much of your time and you can not half step or it will show up in your results. Not being consistent in the beginning was holding me back in a vital way. Once I started to be consistent and become obsessed with building my business, I then started to see real results of my hard work.
Another mistake was not putting myself out there more. I think in the beginning I felt weird about promoting my business or sharing the things I was working on. Once I started to actually do it, it became less uncomfortable for me. I learned that you have to promote your business and get in the forefront. Nothing is going to just come to you.
What is one thing that you do daily to grow as an entrepreneur?
One thing that separates me is that I am always thinking outside of the box. I try to stay away from what everyone else is doing and instead just try fresh strategies. For instance, I just launched a Guided Journal this month strictly to aide moms in creating balance. For me this was very unique because there wasn’t one that I could find that was already on the market. Also, creating this product was like creating another form of a coaching tool. I strongly believe that alot of things we need help with we have the answers to. What better way to find the answers than by answering questions that require you to think, put things into perspective and appreciate yourself as a Mom? I could have gone the route of creating Mom cups, T shirts etc but I wanted to do something that would be beneficial for my clients and audience. I am getting great reviews about it and a decent amount of sales, therefore this confirms that the strategy has worked.
What are three books or courses you recommend for new entrepreneurs?
Deep Work by Cal Newport – This book will help entrepreneurs get more productive. With social media and a bunch of other distractions in the world sometimes its hard to sit still and just work. This book really shapes your mind and thoughts when it comes to really doing real work.
Atomic Habits by James Clear – This book is crucial because of the fact that starting a business requires you to change your habits, become disciplined, get rid of things that are holding you back, etc. This book shows you how to do so. I honestly would suggest this as one of the first books to read.
Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Chan Kim / Renée Mauborgne – This is probably my favorite when it comes to really trying to market your business or just simply build your business out in a way that you stand out. This book is about helping you unlock different areas or (other parts of the ocean to swim in) to be able to stand out so you wont get lost in what others are doing. This book taught me how to be more creative and more of a forward thinker.
What is the one thing you wish you knew before starting your business?
I wish I knew how important it is to spend more time acting rather than researching. Researching is great and should 100 percent be done. At the same time its so easy to get caught up in researching and perfecting everything that it makes you procrasinate actually getting the business started. I feel like I wasted a lot more time than was necessary, overthinking and researching rather than getting out there. I am sure I could have been further ahead. Now I research and study as I go.
What has been your most effective marketing strategy to grow your business?
Social Media Marketing has been very effective for me. Organically building a community on social media has been helping me grow a lot. Facebook Ad’s has been a very great marketing strategy for me as well. I want to learn more about creating different ad’s and explore more things in that area but it has been great to start.
If you only had $1000 dollars to start a new business, knowing everything you know now, how would you spend it?
I would spend it mostly on advertisement because sometimes its hard in the begininng to get in front of your target audience. Investing in ads really helps put you in front of an audience that you may have never been able to get in front of or it would have taken longer.
What’s your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?
My best piece of advice is to not let your mind trick you into thinking you are not capable of suceeding. It is so easy to look at others that appear to be further ahead or doing good from the outside looking in, that it can make you doubt yourself and your process. Everything takes time and alot of times we dont see the background work that others had to do. Patience and focus will really take you far.
What is your favorite quote?
My favorite quote is “what the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve” by Napoleon Hill but there has been another quote that has been a favorite while on my entrepreneurship journey and it is “Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway” by John Wayne. This quote perfectly describes entreprenership, it is a scary leap but when you believe wholeheartedly in your gift and dreams the only option is to go after it.
