The overall message I want to share with my readers is that it’s never too early to learn about credit. Most parents don’t discuss credit with their children because they don’t know how to explain it, or they have limited knowledge on the topic themselves. I want every page to provide teachable moments for parents and children so that financial literacy and generational wealth is achieved.
What were the top three mistakes you made writing / publishing your book what did you learn from it?
The top three mistakes I made was thinking that publishing a book would be easier for children, not building anticipation before the coloring books launched, and not building a social media following prior to the launch. As an entrepreneur, I have always stuck by the idea of speed of implementation.
Jumping in and getting started has led me to be successful in real estate, but I quickly learned the difference when self-publishing a book. Throughout this process, I have learned to cover the basics first before diving straight in.
The advice I would give is to do your research and study your competition. Self-publishing is very competitive, but there is a seat for you at the table if you have done your research up front.
What is the one thing you wished you knew before publishing your first book?
The one thing I wish I knew is that publishing a book is not as passive as I thought. Every day I market the coloring books because no one knows how great they are.
Marketing techniques that have worked for me is being consistent and establishing a presence on social media. I post every day about my coloring books. I also have narrowed my target audience and place most of my attention on them.
If you had the chance to start your career over again what would you do differently?
I would have started in real estate a lot sooner. The idea of home ownership did not resonate with me until later. As an educator for several years, I always thought buying a home was a single purchase and did not think of it as another stream of income. I would have also written more children’s books to help kids learn what is not taught in school.
