Roxanne Christian: Music as Therapy in Business and Entrepreneur Life

Roxanne Christian

Roxanne Christian, graduate of Berklee College of Music, is and international board certified music therapist and founder of Live Love Life Music.  She has over a decade of experience working with physical, mental, emotional, and cognitive needs within district school boards, municipal nursing homes, psychiatric hospitals, and other populations within the community.

Roxanne uses music to work on non musical goals in facilitating healing, wellness, rehabilitation, and the creative processes.

Roxanne continues to work with a wide range of people; however, currently her emphasis is on helping individuals experiencing anxiety, boost their confidence and self worth through the power of words and psycho-education, music therapy, and relaxation techniques, so they can best position themselves to accomplish their next major milestone.

Please tell us a little bit about your company – what is Music therapy and Live Love Life Music all about?

Music therapy is an allied health profession that systematically uses music to accomplish non musical goals. This process is facilitated by a board-certified music therapist.

Live Love Life Music is the name of my music therapy business.  We provide services to a wide population including and not limited to: seniors in retirement communities; long term care facilities; education facilities (mostly preschool, elementary, and high schools); mental health clinics; and domestic abuse shelters.

Through the strategic use of music and movement, music and guided meditation, breathing methods, song writing, instrument playing, lyric analysis; vibrational healing, and chanting/toning non musical goals are met.

Other services Live Love Music provides are voice over/voice talent work, birthday parties; corporate stress management interactive presentations; recording projects; and music performance/entertainment.

Tell us a little bit about your background and how you started your company?

I graduated from Berklee College of Music, completed my internship, and received my board certification.

I ended up working for corporate in my field from 2007 – 2015 mainly with The California Dept of Mental Health and Aurora Charter Oak Hospital.

In 2015 I relocated back to Canada only because I need to retreat from a very abusive, life-threatening relationship, and once settled in Canada I decided to create my own music therapy company instead of working for others.

What are your plans, how do you plan to grow this company?

I plan to create an online mental health and wellness coaching program that helps those who are experience stress and anxiety and need accountability, motivation, tools, and methods to accomplish their next major life milestone.

What was the biggest problem you encountered with your business and how did you overcome it?

Having to turn away clients because my schedule cannot fit anymore. I am in the process of creating my services in digital form so I can serve by 1:Many as opposed to 1:1 or group sessions.

What were the top mistakes you made starting your business and what did you learn from it?

Not having contracts in place before taking on clients. It is important to have documents that state all expectations of all parties involved to refer to if need be.

How do you separate yourself from your competitors?

The unique world instruments I use.

What is one thing that you do daily to grow as an entrepreneur?

Keep up to date with online/digital marketing and creative digital versions of my services.

What are three books or courses you recommend for new entrepreneurs?

I read more self-development/self-help and spiritual books more than business books. Here are some of my favorite books: 7 Habits of Highly Effective People; The Healing Power of Water; and The Presence Process.

Here are courses I would recommend: Landmark Education International’s SELP (Self Expression and Leadership) course, and their Communication and Advanced Communication course

What is the one thing you wish you knew before starting your business?

The importance of creating systems, procedures, protocols, contracts, and doing your market research to find out how you need to compete and stand out

What has been your most effective marketing strategy to grow your business?

Contacting organizations and offering a complimentary session that markets itself through experiencing service

Applying and taking part in grant competitions (it’s great for learning, networking, and potentially getting funded)

If you only had $1000 dollars to start a new business, knowing everything you know now, how would you spend it?

I would go to networking events and set up complimentary sessions for various businesses, individuals and companies to experience which in my experience gets clients, contracts, gigs, and is good word of mouth advertising. The 1K would help with travel expenses and fees to go to the events, and good business cards and marketing brochures

What’s your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?

  • Read as much as you can regarding business, success, entrepreneurship, marketing, and sales.
  • Follow inspiring business, success, and mindset content on Youtube and IG
  • Surround yourself with like-minded people, dreamers, and supporters
  • Network and collaborate
  • Get a mentor or coach

Stay positive, work consistently, and ultimately do what brings you joy and fulfillment!

What is your favorite quote?

“Emancipate yourself from mental slavery.  Nothing but yourself can free your mind”

– Bob Marley
