Interview with Nicholas Cordato and Amanda Morales: Selarom Search Solutions

Selarom Search Solutions

Amanda: I started my Human Resources career path after College in 2013 and now, a first time business owner at the age of 28. I am no stranger when it comes to adapting in different environments. I have traveled to many different states to gain the experience and knowledge I have as an Human Resources Professional & Recruiter. Entrepreneurship was always a goal of mine and  I am proud of being able to achieve that in a field of work I genuinely enjoy.

Aside from my undeniable passion in this field, I also enjoy volunteering to help others. I was an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) which is a Civil Society Program by the U.S. Federal Government where I helped develop a Child Care Program for the Refugee Division in Arizona. I currently volunteer with CareerVillage where I give career advice and guidance, virtually, to students of all grade levels.

Nicholas: The path that I have taken to becoming a first-time entrepreneur has been a disconnected one. I am a former collegiate athlete. I have a Bachelor of Science in GeoSciences. I have worked as the Northeast U.S. Head Environmental Health & Safety Manager for a Global Metals and Municipal Recycling company. I proudly serve five of the country’s most densely populated cities as a Firefighter. It was only fitting that I took the jump into entrepreneurship to add another passion into my life. I have always had a love for helping people who are in tough situations. Becoming a Recruitment entrepreneur also checks that box off the list. I have tackled this new challenge with even more grit and determination than I have tackled anything in my life. I truly do believe that if you fully put your mind into something, you will achieve your goals. While I may not have had the years of experience as other professionals in this field, my journey needed to begin somewhere.

Please tell us a little bit about your business – what is Selarom Search Solutions all about?

Selarom Search Solutions is a Recruitment Agency where we focus on helping individuals with employment as well as helping companies expand their teams. We primarily work in the IT sector for Direct Hire, C-Suite (Executive) Placement, and Intern-To-Hire Placement Services. Our services are also altered towards employers and applicants. We act more as an extension of the HR department for employers rather than a Recruitment agency that solely cares about placing.

Tell us a little bit about your background and how you started your business?

Amanda: I’ve been working as a Professional Recruiter for the past 9 years and Nick was head Manager for a reputable Metal and Steel company. He’s also a mathematician.  My former employer actually motivated this idea because of the lack of appreciativeness they had towards me once I successfully helped them with their employment needs. Therefore, Nick and I co-founded Selarom Search Solutions to place quality applicants and help businesses grow.

How do you plan to grow this business?

Amanda: We are currently working within a very small geographical area which will allow us to grow by name and reputation. We have plans to grow the business by expanding nationwide as well as adding services for our Employers and Applicants.

What were the top mistakes you made starting your business, and what did you learn from it?

Amanda: We mutually agree that procrastination is the top mistake to make when becoming a new business owner. You just have to get to it and execute everything the right way. The minute you start thinking “I’ll get to that later” you have to immediately snap out of it. It does take a toll on the process and delays progression for the company.

How do you separate yourself from your competitors?

Nicholas: We spent a lot of time, energy, and resources getting to know our target market and our geographical area. While other Recruitment Agencies are doing General Recruitment for all different types of sectors, we solely focus on one particular, specific niche. With that niche being Web and Mobile Software Development with a focus on the React.JS and React Native JavaScript Frameworks. Being that we offer a specialty type of recruitment as opposed to the many Recruitment Generalist companies, we are able to carve out a very dedicated client base who know they are receiving the best available Developers to bring on to their team.

Most companies aim to give the client a good candidate in any sector, we aim to give the Employer great candidates in one sector. We see it like this; Would you go to a General Recruiter for a specialty role? or go to a Recruiting Specialist who specializes in that specialty role? That is how we separate ourselves from our competition.

What is one thing that you do daily to grow as an entrepreneur?

Amanda: I like to advance my knowledge and read more on how I can be better than the day before. I believe there’s no such thing as knowing too much even if I am knowledgeable in the field. When being a business owner, there’s so much to learn, to look forward to, new approaches to take and to achieve. Never stop learning.

Nicholas: I am constantly setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Agreed upon, Realistic, and Time-based) goals for myself that I work towards daily. The tasks that I complete that enable me to reach my SMART goals vary depending on the goal that I set for myself. There is no concrete “one size fits all” answer, as I like to better myself in all facets of life.

What are three books or courses you recommend to entrepreneurs?

Amanda: We both have books of our own that give us well-rounded insight on how to improve as an entrepreneur such as, but not limited to, developmental books in business and personal growth. It is not only business we tackle, but as well as the psychological aspect of things and the daily “How To”.

We also recommend signing up for the free courses both “Harvard Business Online” and “Coursera” offers. Depending on the sector you plan to go in, there are many courses to choose from to help in the very beginning and in the long term.

If you only had $1000 dollars to start a new business, knowing everything you know now, how would you spend it?

Nicholas: I think Amanda and I could confidently agree that we did start the business the right way. If we did have $1000 dollars to start a new business with everything we know now,  we would invest the same way as we have.

What is your favorite quote?

Amanda: “ The best investment is in the tools of one’s own trade” -Benjamin Franklin

Nicholas:  “It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.” -George Herman Ruth
